Event Description
These are the rescheduled performances from the original dates of April 17–19, 2020.
Long before she was the chart-topping music legend Carole King, she was Carol Klein, a Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager, and by the time she reached her 20s, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock n’ roll. But, it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her true voice.
For six years prior to closing in 2020, Beautiful, the Tony and Grammy Award-winning Carole King musical, thrilled Broadway with the inspiring true story of one woman’s remarkable journey from teenage songwriter to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Featuring over two dozen pop classics, including “You’ve Got a Friend,” “One Fine Day,” “Up on the Roof,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” and “Natural Woman,” this crowd-pleasing, international phenomenon is filled with the songs you remember and a story you’ll never forget!

Pre-Show Lecture – Carole King by Christine Wisch
Friday, December 10
7–7:45 p.m.
Woodburn Hall Room 120
FREE. Open to Beautiful ticket holders and the public.
Scholars and fans alike have credited Carole King with giving voice to a generation of women that sought to redefine gender norms and expectations. This presentation will explore how Carole King broke new ground as a female singer-songwriter and consider the enduring challenges female artists face in the male-dominated music industry. The talk will also include musical analysis and discussion of selected performances and what they reveal about King’s own life and the audiences she reached.
Christine Wisch is a Ph.D. Candidate in musicology and an Adjunct Lecturer for Music in General Studies at the Jacobs School of Music. Her course, Women Musicians, explores how gender and sexuality have influenced and affected musical production, consumption, and reception for female and non-binary artists in Western musical traditions since the Middle Ages. Her musicological research focuses on the intersection of music and politics in nineteenth-century Spain. She is particularly interested in questions of patronage, identity, and historiography. A dedicated educator and trained violinist, Christine frequently works as a public musicologist and enjoys collaborating on audience engagement projects. In addition to developing guided listenings for orchestras in Indiana, she has given a variety of pre-concert lectures and written program notes for orchestras and music festivals across the country.
