Tony Award-Winning Musical The Color Purple Makes Bloomington Debut on February 24 and 25
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Tony Award-winning musical The Color Purple makes its Bloomington debut at IU Auditorium on Monday and Tuesday, February 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. This Broadway musical gives exhilarating new spirit to an American classic.
Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and the Academy Award-nominated motion picture, The Color Purple was adapted for the stage by Tony and Pulitzer-winner Marsha Norman with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray.
In 2016, The Color Purple won the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival with its soul-raising score of jazz, gospel, ragtime, and blues. The moving music also won Best Musical Theater album at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
This critically acclaimed production is currently touring coast-to-coast in North America, visiting over 30 cities to share the stunning reimagining of an epic story about young woman’s journey to love and triumph in the American South.
“It’s a pleasure to bring to our stage for the first time what many consider to be one of the greatest revivals to ever hit Broadway,” said IU Executive Director Doug Booher. “This production of The Color Purple is a powerful story that has inspired audiences everywhere it has played, and I know it will do the same here in Bloomington.”
The Color Purple at IU Auditorium is sponsored by Indiana Memorial Union and the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs. IU Auditorium’s 2019–2020 season is presented by B97, French Lick Resort, Curry Auto Center, The Herald-Times, World Arts Inc., and IU Residential Programs and Services.
