Tony Award-Nominated Broadway Hit Waitress Makes Bloomington Debut October 5 and 6
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The fun and contemporary Broadway hit Waitress will make its debut in Bloomington at IU Auditorium on Tuesday, October 5 and Wednesday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m.
The musical stars Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker, who dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage. Pouring her heart into her pies, she crafts desserts that mirror her topsy-turvy life such as “The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie” and “Betrayed By My Eggs Pie.” When a baking contest in a nearby county—and a satisfying encounter with someone new—show Jenna a chance at a fresh start, she must find the courage to seize it. Change is on the menu, as long as Jenna can write her own perfectly personal recipe for happiness.
This Tony Award-nominated hit was brought to life on stage by a groundbreaking, all-female creative team. This Broadway musical features original music and lyrics by Grammy winner Sara Bareilles ("Brave," "Love Song"), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam), and original direction by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Hair, Pippin).
Critics have raved about Waitress. Entertainment Weekly says, “Waitress is a little slice of heaven!” and New York Magazine calls it “sweet, sassy and passionate.”
“We can’t wait to reopen our doors and kick off the 2021–2022 season with the national Broadway tour of Waitress as it makes its Bloomington debut,” said IU Auditorium Executive Director Doug Booher. “This uplifting story is sure to leave the audience in good spirits and singing the catchy songs penned by Sara Bareilles for years to come.”
The hilarious and charming musical recently was the first full production to reopen Broadway earlier this month for a limited run in New York City at the Barrymore Theatre. A production also opened on September 4 for a UK and Ireland Tour and the U.S. tour launches the same week as the musical arrives in Bloomington.
Waitress at IU Auditorium is presented in partnership with Lamar Outdoor Advertising and Baird Private Wealth Management. IU Auditorium’s 2021–2022 season is presented by B97, Curry Auto Center, The Herald Times, CFC Properties, and World Arts Inc.
